2 May 2017: Opening night

Queenstown Film Society’s first screening of the 2017 season will be on Tuesday 2 May at 8.15 pm in our usual home of Dorothy Browns Cinema, Arrowtown. This year we once again have a truly varied programme with a bit of everything from the Japanese classic that inspired Star Wars to some delightful examples of recent world cinema.

Join us early to celebrate the start of the season with a glass of bubbles from 7.30 pm, and if you need to sign up or renew your membership, please be sure to get there as early as you can.
The opening film will be:

Damián Szifron, Argentina/Spain, 2014, R16, 122 mins

A surprise sensation from Argentina, Wild Tales is a compendium of lavishly produced shorts united by a theme of vengeance. This deeply biting satirical anthology easily lives up to its name, blowing up convention with six stories of polite society gone wrong, lives destroyed by parking fines, road rage escalating into apocalyptic confrontations and wedding parties descending into blood-soaked mess.

“From aeroplanes to cars, from cafes to sitting rooms, bourgeois repression is not so much dissected as gleefully detonated from within.” – Mark Kermode

“Wickedly delightful…for pure viewing pleasure, the one wild card in the Cannes competition this year is unlikely to be beaten.” – Jay Weissberg
